The Monastery of Saint Mary of Zvrnec

The Monastery of Saint Mary of Zvrnec is one of the most popular Byzantine monasteries in the Vlora region. Its location is on one of the islands of the Narta lagoon. The founder of monastic life was Pakomi who was born and lived in Egypt during the 4th century. He created the first community of people who lived apart and devoted themselves only to faith. These people were called monks and lived in assemblies, from where they left everyday life and sought peace and quiet in solitude. Their main duty was to pray to God together, while the rest of the time they spent devoting themselves to crafts, writing books, copying treaties, other activities, etc.

The facade of this Monastery consists of seven arches supported by six columns, which are influenced by Roman and Byzantine architecture. In the western part of the church is the bell tower, which may be of the same construction time as the exonarthex (Aleksandër Meksi, Arkitektura mesjetare ne Albania, Tirana 1983, p. 128-129). Today this monastery is considered one of the tourist attractions of special importance for Vlora and Albania. Many local and foreign tourists visit it closely and enjoy the natural beauty that surrounds it.
